A Trip to Croatia – Sailing and Old Cities

This lesser known vacation destination was the right fit for these two adventurous travelers. We loved Croatia. We had been recommended by friends to check it out, and it was everything we hoped for. Overall to me it felt like a mixture of Italy and what I’d imagine Greece to be like. Lots of small old cities, gorgeous coastline, endless seafood, pizza, and ice cream. The capital city of Zagreb kicked off our trip, followed by a week on a small sailboat cruising along the coast. A nice stop in Split, and a short ride to Dubrovnik to finish. The charm of this country will stay with us both for a long time.

Texas Tourism – Nick Simonite [Part 1 of 2]

This was the big shoot of my year! Photographer Nick Simonite was chosen by Slingshot Agency in Dallas to create over 40 images for the Office of the Governor, Department of Economic Development & Tourism. These images would create the next edition of the printed Texas Travel Guide, online at TravelTex.com, and several other magazines and venues promoting tourism of this great state!

Paired with Homestead Creatives, we all produced 24 shoot days in Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, Port Aransas, Galveston, Amarillo, and several other small towns with something truly unique to offer! We divided forces; city by city, to cover so many fantastic things to do, eat, see, and experience. Maddie and Shannon from Homestead took El Paso and the Guadalupe Mountains to start, a real challenge! Meanwhile I set up Dallas, and Houston. There were heavy rains and flooding in Dallas which required a second visit.

Nick Simonite worked through creative concepts from our art directors, bringing his own beauty into the images through lighting, camera angle, and genuine expressions with our models (whether hired talent or real cowboys). We had a traveling “core” crew moving from place to place, as well as picking up local crew in cities where we needed greater resources for the more complex shots. We broke the shoot into a few segments to maintain a high level of quality without exhausting our enduring photographer.

Medtronic – David Ellis

I’ll admit… I still get very excited about going back home to MN for photo shoots. David Ellis called me up for a few days at Medtronic via InterbrandHealth agency, shooting several scenes and portraits with both hired models and a lot of employees. We even had a second camera team shooting video by DP Eric Schleicher. Aside the expected corporate scenes, I had the opportunity to see much deeper into how Medtronic operates and how they’ve grown over the years. My good friend Ryan Davis even made it in front of the camera for a few employee driven shots. David is an wonderful person to work alongside. He’s very patient and has many ideas how to create the images and bring our client’s ideas to life.

HEB Texas Pets Dog Food – Nicole Mlakar

This would be the second HEB project that Nicole Mlakar brought me on board to produce with her. She’s such a talented photographer and creates stunning images of both people and animals. This new line of HEB Dog Food called “Texas Pets” would feature unique stories of different rescue animals; one for each of the food varieties (Adult, Puppy, Small Dog, Hunting Dog, etc). That means that we got to meet some really incredible animals and owners!! Nicole worked her charm with each of the pooches, finding the right space for each of them to feel comfortable, and believe it or not, the perfect “expressions”.

It’s always so fun to see your work out in the real world. Here are some of the images, and found bags in my local HEB grocery store:

Jewelers Mutual Insurance with Channing Johnson

Channing Johnson from Boston MA got the call from McGarryBowen Agency to shoot for Jewelers Mutual Insurance and they chose Austin TX for the scenery. This was a particularly fun shoot for me since they didn’t really want model type people, and I got to call up all my friends to be in the photos. Just the right demographic! We ran around Austin’s beautiful outdoor park areas and entertaining shopping and restaurant strips. They went home with a huge collection of images, and my friends got some very beautiful and intimate photos together. Win win all the way.

Samsung ATIV for DOD – Vanessa Gavalya

Let me just say that working with Vanessa Gavalya was one of the smoothest and easiest experiences I’ve had for a while. She is so incredibly kind and sweet and has such an incredible spirit about her. You should definitely give her a try sometime. Vanessa has a full-time manager who helps with many of her projects, but this time she asked to bring me on board for a higher level of production with my experience. We all worked as a team to create some gorgeous new imagery for Samsung’s tough line of products, being marketed to the US Dept of Defense, and other Government departments. The ad agency leading creative was Ignite Partnership in Dallas. We covered a spectrum from Military usage, to federal courthouse and office roles, and down to local law enforcement actions. We had a great time in all the locations, getting muddy and running around. The models were all great sports the entire time, up for whatever we needed. The images are just starting to trickle into the Samsung US Business site.

Target Wedding Video Shoot and Registry Event in Austin

For this Target Live Wedding Registry Event in Austin, there were many parties involved. The event itself was run by a separate team, moving the promotional event from city to city, taking over a home in which to create a stylish wedding registry example that you could actually walk through (rather than zapping in the store). This would eventually be posted online in their Most Popular Registry Lists.

The other component was a video shoot, featuring two unique Austin personalities to demonstrate and endorse real registry items. Then, we would have these talented folks show up at the registry house for the event night. The videos would be shot in the days just before the event. The shoot was rescheduled into new dates that would conflict with my other projects, so I tag teamed with Maddie Hamilton (now of Homestead Creatives)

Google Apps for Work – Kyle Monk

Google created their own Adsense Ads, and we helped to make it all happen!
https://www.google.com/work/apps/smallbiz/

This “combo shoot” was based on 7 scenes shooting both stills and video. Most of the shoots I’ve been on where separate teams are shooting but overlapping still and video, the video team takes priority BUT this time our still team was leading! Kyle Monk was the photographer and helped out a lot with the creative to make the ideal concepts come true. We were paired with a fantastic video team lead by Director Martin Rodahl of 71 Degrees North. It was a perfect pairing! We shot several scenes in the South Congress area and Downtown Austin. Ad Agency Upshot from Chicago brought their best and brightest to make it all happen.

Schwinn Bikes in Austin – Jonathan Chapman

This one started out as a nail-biter! We weren’t sure if the weather was going to cooperate, but thankfully we got some stellar days for Jonathan Chapman to come shoot in one of his favorite cities, Austin TX. The creatives over at Pacific Cycle, aka Schwinn Bicycles, requested a new series of photos and videos to be shot for a mass marketing campaign. We had the pleasure of partnering with some familiar faces from the previous shoot in San Diego CA; my favorite, technical specialist Ron! Our location scout found us some incredible neighborhoods, including my own, plus some really gorgeous parks. Casting was a breeze to find cute kids, but got challenging when we needed them to be really good bike riders too. We hit two big markets: Hispanic and Caucasian. Images can be seen online and in any stores that sell Schwinn bikes and gear.

Panasonic Retail in LA – Jonathan Chapman

Jonathan Chapman called me to produce a photo and video shoot featuring Panasonic‘s latest line of Toughbook and Toughpad tablets via the ad agency Phelps. Setting was destined to be Los Angeles, and we found some great locations! One high end quick food service restaurant, and one very stylish furniture and decor shop. Drake University Student Life – Jonathan Chapman

Our good friend Sara Janssen over at The Thorburn Group reached out for an exciting shoot in the glorious midwest. Drake University was in need on a rebrand and new fresh collection of images, and Jonathan Chapman is just the man for the job!! The shoot days would be very filled with a huge variety of scenarios, and some really fantastic student models. We had a good amount of students volunteer ahead of time, but also cast many on the spot. I’ve got to say that Drake University students dress snappy! A second camera run by DP Eric Schleicher and an aerial drone piloted and shot by Bruce Christianson really added a huge bonus.

US Marines in DC – Mark Katzman

This shoot was for the one and only US Marines (USMC) in Washington DC. Mark Katzman was awarded the project from Uniworld Group and JWT Atlanta, both wonderful agencies. He asked me to help with the production and I got my first taste in working with the Marines. It was challenging, given the location and availability of the and we turned out quite a lot of photos for these Servicemen.

I’ve been looking forward to a shoot with Mark Katzman for a long time. I’ve respected his high level of quality work and have heard such great things about his personality. Mark’s photo rep Paula Gren also has Jonathan Chapman in the roster which is how we’ve come to know each other. This was my 2nd time to DC, both in one year, previously visited with my father earlier this summer. I was glad to be back in a bustling city of politics.

Toyota Rav4 – Ashton Rodgers

I had another opportunity to do a shoot with Ashton Rodgers for Toyota. This one was honestly pretty darn easy since there was already a TV commercial happening. Our task was simply to coordinate with the tv team and borrow talent as we had the opportunity. Still turned out some really fun photos! Plus it’s great to see these up high on billboards around town.

Shaw Floors & HGTV Smart Home – Ryann Ford

Finally! Another shoot with Ryann Ford! Right here in Austin TX. The shoot was for Shaw Flooring based in Atlanta GA, with Resource/Ammirati their ad agency from Columbus OH. It’s been too long since the last shoot I had with Ryann (Four Hands Furniture), and this was quite a treat. HGTV built a gorgeous Smart Home in Austin for magazine features and eventually as a prize giveaway. We were on site to highlight the Shaw Flooring throughout the house: hardwood, tile, and carpet. Ryann’s ability to capture spaces beautifully, and adding the human element to make the scene more personal. We even worked in a puppy. Take a look!

After the Ryann’s great shoot days, I worked directly for the internal video design team of Resource/Ammirati to shoot b-roll details all around the house. Video post yet to come.

The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is a leading drug & alcohol treatment center & recovery community. My good friend and art buyer over at Modern Climate asked me to get Jonathan Chapman on board for this shoot and produce this project. We gained access to the Hazelden campus for portraits of two of their top counselors, and then had an opportunity to feature a great story of Elizabeth, a girl completing her recovery program. Tadd Myers shoots ANconnect in Dallas

Tadd Myers hired me to produce another round in Dallas via The Richards Group. We had recently shot Anderson Merchandisers, and this shoot was for their division called ANconnect. ANconnect, along with Anderson Merchandisers, provides its clients with end-to-end solutions with its intelligent supply and broad distribution network. A few beautiful days and Dallas, with backstage access to some warehouse spaces and offices, Tadd created exactly what they needed for a full website refresh. Red Gold Tomatoes Indiana – Jonathan Chapman

Family farms support Red Gold Tomatoes, and Jonathan Chapman was asked to go out to capture these five families doing what they do best. This time around, I would be the off-site producing but I sure wish I could have been there in-person. My task was to coordinate with the finest farmers I’ve ever had the pleasure of chatting with, and help to get them on board with the project. Castrol NFL in Houston – Jonathan Zizzo

Castrol partnered with the NFL for a very silly ad campaign in which Minnesota Vikings player Adrian Peterson would be the star! The campaign would run on Facebook for a whole year, a new image rolling out every 2 weeks! Jonathan Zizzo from Dallas and I travelled to Houston for the shoot via ad agency Ogilvy & Mather (NYC). We had many tongue-and-cheek scenarios for Adrian to act out. He was such a ham in front of the camera!! Bonnie did a great job finding such ridiculous props (many with a Vikings theme) on such short notice. Everything happened so quickly that I didn’t have time to take behind the scenes photos, but I did get a snap of me holding our supporting actor “Little Burrito”, teacup chihuahua. Oh yeah, and something about a chrome Corvette too.

Chris Crisman brings me to his ‘hood: Philly

Do you remember that really great party you went to, but couldn’t tell ANYbody. That’s a lot like what’s happening here *wink*wink* I had the pleasure of producing and casting a really wonderful shoot for Chris Crisman back in his neck of the woods, Philadelphia!! We cannot mention the client nor the agency here, so I must be vague. But seriously, this was a big one. The shoot involved 20 models, and we shot for three days in and around Philly. We were backed with a wonderful support crew and made some incredible images.

Let me say, that I REALLY liked it there. Of the New England cities I’ve visited, I could actually see myself living there for a while. I really wish I could tell you more. No finals to show, just a collection of shots from my adventures out east, and some ambiguous snaps not to allude to anything we shot. Can’t wait to return!

Toyota Corolla – Ashton Rodgers

It had been a little while since Ashton Rodgers and I were able to work side by side again, and this one was smooth as silk. The shoot was for the new Toyota Corolla, in a clever ad developed by MMB – Boston. We partnered with a video team in order to double the amount to assets our clients were able to take home. The best part was how well we were able to share so many of the resources to keep costs low. We created an entire second “set” on location, just one block away from the video team. While they were filming the Caucasian family, we would capture the Hispanic family. Really genius, and super efficient. At the end of the day, we even shot some bonus “rolling shots” of the gorgeous new Corolla model. We had a ton of fun with this one.

Anderson Merchandisers with Tadd Myers in Dallas

Dallas Photographer Tadd Myers brought me on board for a project through The Richards Group, the largest independently owned agency in the country. We were capturing Anderson Merchandisers employees at work showing off one of their installation locations, a great example all throughout a new Wal Mart store just north of the city of Dallas. We followed up with coverage of office life in Anderson Merchandisers headquarters, a beautiful workspace high up in the tallest Granite Property building. I got an inside view on how items are displayed in the stores where we all shop, and what happens behind the scenes to make sure these stores look their best.

5 Cities: American Express with Jonathan Chapman

5 Major Cities
15 Days
40 Crew
116 Models
9 Flights
10,900 Air Miles
36,200 Captures
1.1 Terabytes of Raw Data
4 Great Ad Agency Folks
2 Wonderful Clients
1 Amazing Photographer: Jonathan Chapman!

This was undoubtedly the longest and most complex shoot of my career. It was a lot like producing five overlapping shoots all at once. We had 40 crew, and 116 models throughout the project. The task was to feature small business owners in different cities who perfectly represent the wide variety and unique characteristics that are so special to these personally owned merchants. Of course they were all great enthusiasts of American Express, and we had no problem finding plenty to photograph. We found businesses in big cities, new neighborhoods, historic districts, wintery main streets, and classic suburbia.

Over the 15 day project, we would shoot 2-3 businesses per day for two days, then travel on to the next metropolitan location. Lather, rinse, repeat. We did this again and again, five times over. Delta was good to us on all 9 flights and over 10,900 miles. We stayed in a few finer hotels, and a few that simply had a great location for us logistically. One hotel had a broken elevator and we were given rooms on the ninth floor; no joke. Everyone made themselves at home in the motorhome during the shoot day, and 15-passenger mega-van for cruising the town.

We created a hybrid crew of four traveling members, supplemented by talented locals in each city. Many of the locals impressed me greatly and I’m excited to hire many of them again in the future. The large volume of data management, proper storage, and multiple backups were a major task! Chris Worlow (digi tech) did a fantastic job keeping it all very organized, and ready for presentation to the creatives throughout each day. And we couldn’t ask for a better right-hand-man to see us through the whole trip than Eric Schleicher!

Texas Photo Round Up – Stephanie Rausser

My good friends at I LOVE TEXAS PHOTO, ASMP, and ACP recruited me to produce two back-to-back workshops for San Francisco based Stephanie Rausser Photography. Stephanie brought with her husband/digi-tech/media-manager/tech-guru Lawrence Cowell, who she couldn’t live without. We were looking for an amazing mid-century modern home and Nicole Mlakar nailed it! She’s our assistant with great connections. The workshops would look like this: Day1 meet at location, break into small groups, photograph various models throughout the property… all under Stephanie’s advice and supervision. Day2 meet in studio for discussion and review of each student’s top images from the previous day. Additional conversations to discuss Lawrence’s digital workflow and elaborate backup/access system. Plus Stephanie took time to provide portfolio reviews for each student who desired it.

Here are just a few great images from the students!

Matrix Fitness Toronto & Maui – Jonathan Chapman

I had the pleasure of referring Jonathan for an amazing project for Matrix Fitness. The art director contacted me and asked for production help and referrals for photographers that would be great for the job. After sifting through a concise list, they chose the very talented Jonathan Chapman! This project would be multi-city, and international throughout January and February this year. We began in Toronto Ontario Canada, made a quick stop at Matrix Fitness HQ mock-fitness-center in Lake Mills WI, and finally off to Maui Hawaii.

The imagery would create a library of images designated for a beautiful brochure aiming to sell their commercial line of equipment to luxury hotels and similar clients. Thus, what better place to photograph their machines than high-end hotels including Four Seasons and Hyatt Andaz. These locations were truly top notch in every space including amazing guest rooms, breathtaking lobbies, and gorgeous fitness centers (or centres in Canada, eh). The printed piece is quite remarkable. Very inspiring and packed with lovely images from Jonathan.

I located great crew in each city, and did remote casting to find us the perfect models needed to demonstrate each Matrix Fitness cardio or strength exercise. We even pulled off a few spa-inspired looks. The scenery, and models, plus Jonathan’s direction, lighting, and captures were a winning combination.

We stayed for an extra couple days in Maui to soak in the culture, and I went solo for a bonus day in Toronto. Jonathan wanted to shoot a motion test while in Hawaii, so we set up something really special on a very wild side of the island. More to come later in that blog entry!

Here are a few pages from the brochure. I’m still amazed at how beautifully it turned out. The brochure can be downloaded here: http://www.matrixfitness.com/docs/hospitality_brochure.pdf

Sweet Baby Rays BBQ – Ashton Rodgers

Ashton Rodgers, photographer based in San Antonio TX, gave me a very exciting call to partner with him in creating a bid, and landing the job for Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce via MMB (McCarthy Mambro Bertino) in Boston. What better place to shoot than right here in central Texas! So many great barbecue options to explore for our environment surroundings. We visited the famous barbecue city of Lockhart TX, it’s neighbor Lubing TX, and of course several options in my beloved Austin. As it turns out, the Austin offerings were amazing in their product, but the establishments are all rather small or based in food trailers. Wonderful for the people of Austin, but wouldn’t work for our needs with Sweet Baby Rays.

The restaurants in Lockhart TX were so much older, larger, and just perfect for us. We ended up shooting in the famous Kreuz Market BBQ, and Luling City Market BBQ. Each had the character and years of beautiful carcinogens covering the walls and ceilings, resulting in their signature flavors. The fellas running these bbq joints were also just wonderful for the campaign. True characters in their trade! These men have been featured in magazines such as Texas Monthly several times. We just can’t get enough barbecue here in Texas.

We captured several different scenes with and without model talent. The weather was the coldest that Lockhart TX had seen in many many years. It was only 27º all day, and we were to be set up in the screen patio area at Kreuz. The Boston agency men and myself (being from MN) handled it quite well, but the Texans were all struggling to keep warm. Ashton did a great job keeping the energy high and capturing great expressions from the chilly model talent. On the last day we headed back into the studio to knock out a few prepared food shots with our food stylist: a very saucy bbq beef and bacon burger, and some gorgeous chicken wings as a special add on.

Chris Crisman back for more San Antonio, aka Mercado v2.0

Maybe Chris Crisman couldn’t get enough of San Antonio, or maybe San Antonio couldn’t get enough of Chris! Either way, he asked me to produce a couple more days for him here in Texas and I couldn’t be happier to see him and his team again. It was a lot like getting the band back together. And we actually DID get a band in this round! We were tasked with capturing a few more elements to add in to the very elaborate scenes we created last year for the Unforgettable campaign with Proof Advertising. This time I needed to find a queen, a horse, a band, and a few more unique bits to fit the ads.

Taxidermy – Jonathan Chapman

Happy New Year! Jonathan Chapman was roadtripping with his family for the holidays and made a few days stop here in Austin TX. Paul Irmiter with triathletes of Bennett Endurance in Miami

I was asked to coordinate the production of videos for Crystal Farms All White Egg Whites shot and directed in Miami FL by Paul Irmiter of 612im via GdB (Gabriel deGrood Bendt) ad agency. We partnered with Olympic triathletes Greg and Laura Bennett of Bennett Endurance to create a video series that shares their inside knowledge from being professional endurance athletes. The city of Miami was chosen due to convenience for our stars, but there might have been some allure for the Minnesota team to escape the cold in December as well.

To be honest, things started a little rocky on the Friday afternoon before our flights, and escalated on our pre-light day. We were swindled by an equipment vendor who we later found out is known for taking advantage of out-of-towners such as ourselves, and then the sound stage studio I reserved was given away to another crew. Thankfully, we had two fearless grip crew on our side that helped with a fast and efficient relocation into a friendly and professional, well established stage. Wonderful!! These challenges only make for a stronger bank of experience for this producer.

After we began shooting, the day was a breeze. Greg & Laura have wonderful personalities, especially for being international celebrities. Throughout the shoot, we captured enough footage for at least 26 tips, responding to commonly asked questions about training for triathlons.

Visit the All White Egg Whites Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/allwhiteseggs) and Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1kItpYaMtEA20UAbyg8WYg) to view all the videos. Stay tuned for more tips from the Bennetts throughout the year, releasing about every two weeks.

Jay B shoots more Costa del Mar for a very Merry Fishmas!

Costa del Mar sunglasses wanted a new ad for their Christmas promotions, cleverly titled “Merry Fishmas”, targeting the fishermen who love the specialty sunglasses. Jay B Sauceda was just the man for the job! Direction lead by McGarrah Jessee agency here in Austin, we created several awesome versions for print and Facebook publication over two days of shooting. The only tough part was locating a great looking tree during early October in Texas, just days before we began shooting. After a few visits to local tree nurseries, we came up with disappointing options. Finally, I got a hot lead an hour outside of the city at the Elgin Christmas Tree Farm. Although they didn’t have the classic Douglas Fir trees, they had some great tree candidates, and a whole petting zoo of fun furry animals! The clients LOVED the trees I found. I was also counting on Amazon to cover me for ornaments, but they didn’t have much, and didn’t have any available for fast delivery. However our local craft store, Hobby Lobby had everything I could wish for. Hundreds of colorful festive options! Jay B set up the shot and lit it like a pro. It’s always a fun day shooting in the Public School studio.

St Olaf College – Alexander Zoltai & Paul Irmiter

Alexander Zoltai Photography got the call for a still + motion shoot in Northfield MN for St Olaf College via The Thorburn Group ad agency. He teamed up with Paul Irmiter of 612im to shoot the motion parts while Alexander would direct the shot. This team was no mistake, they are both represented by Agent Jeff Cerise. I produced the shoot from Austin until a week before the shoot when I’d fly in and scout the locations while meeting the client contact at St Olaf. The campus was breathtakingly beautiful, and the student “actors” we had were exuberant and excited to be involved in the shoot! Scheduling 20+ students, each with very complex availability between classes and other obligations, and cross-checking with all the places we wanted to use for our locations. Unpredictable weather and last minute student cancellations made for a very tricky few days. In the end we got everything we needed and the Vice President of the college was so pleased that he asked us to shoot a few more happenings outside of the original plan. We even added on a day of cinecopter aerial shots giving a birds eye view of the campus. The video was backed by a recognizable track from Cloud Cult band, performed by students of St Olaf, coached by Alumni cellist Daniel Zamzow.

Four Hands Furniture – Ryann Ford

I’ve been trying to set up a photo shoot with Ryann Ford Photography for months! Finally we were able to land a fabulous project with Four Hands Home, Austin based furniture & interior designer. We took their fabulous furniture and placed them in well known, iconic places of Austin. The ads scream “local”, which is a flavor that Austinites love! First, we made the trek up to Mt Bonnell with a living room set in front of a fantastic view of the Pennybacker Bridge (Capital of Texas Highway 360) crossing Lake Austin in the distance. Thankfully we didn’t choose to shoot at the summit, just one of the lower landings with the best view. Next, we shot a dining room set at the recognizable “Greetings from Austin” mural by artist Todd Sanders of the Roadhouse Relics gallery. I had to shut down a couple lanes of traffic here as the mural is on a busy intersection of the Bouldin Creek neighborhood in south Austin. Lastly, we placed a lovely bedroom set along the Hike & Bike trail at Auditorium Shores along Town Lake, with a gorgeous view of downtown just across the water. The only challenge here was making sure that a hundred dogs enjoying their off-leash privileges didn’t make a mess of the bedding. Hah! All the captures looked “perfectly Austin”, as the clients and art director Kelly Colchin wanted.

The images are appearing in several issues of Austin Monthly and Austin Home magazines.

Jack Black for Entertainment Weekly – Miller Mobley

Most of my shoots are for advertising clients, but this week I had an opportunity to coordinate a photo shoot for Entertainment Weekly magazine, featuring Jack Black and the rest of the cast from School of Rock movie for a 10 year Reunion issue. Most of the cast haven’t seen each other since the film was made in 2003, and the reactions upon meeting again were priceless. Those kids were only eleven years old at filming, now twenty one years old having changed a lot! Photographer Miller Mobley flew in from NYC to capture the images and enjoy some time in Austin. We assembled a small army of Hair & Makeup artists to keep all the models moving quickly. The tough part was wrangling all the extra people that accompanied the cast in their visit: a lot of moms, friends, and agents in the studio stage. Jack Black was fun to meet and acted just like you’d imagine: intense and full of ideas. Jack Black helped the cast get excited and give some great expressions. Miller Mobley had the direction and timing to capture the perfect images we needed! It was Jack Black‘s birthday on the shoot day, so I picked up two platters of Austin’s finest birthday treat, Hey Cupcake!. They were a hit for sure!

The feature is on newsstands now: OCT 25, 2013 DOUBLE ISSUE #1282-1283 and online at: http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20433411_20746301_30037663,00.html

We Bought a House!

It looks like we are staying in Austin, because WE BOUGHT A HOUSE!!! And couldn’t be happier. We had planned on starting a slow, laid back search with our realtor, Oliver Hall, but ended up finding our dream house right away. It’s in a relatively new neighborhood that is extremely well planned, taking the space where the old Mueller airport used to be. All the homes and businesses are required to be LEED certified by the US Green Building Council for conserving energy, reducing water consumption, improving indoor air quality, making better building material choices, and driving innovation. It’s all executed in a beautiful way. The neighborhood is called Mueller, and we love it here in Austin TX.

Clayton Hauck from Chicago shoots Bank of America in Houston

Photographer Clayton Hauck has been shooting several Bank of America projects and this round he was asked to highlight a few small business partnerships in Houston TX. His rep contacted me to produce this short series and it was great to connect with crew in another city, just 3 hours away! We traveled around the city to each location and recruited real people for the model talent, with the owner/managers of each business as the star. Everyone involved was happy to participate and had a good time! Creative direction came from Hill Holliday agency in Boston.

Chris Crisman Unforgettable San Antonio Part3

And now it’s time to wrap up this six month adventure! We’ve been working diligently though the retouching process, finding where the illustration concepts will differ from the real world. As these components come together, we see new opportunities and I’ll scramble to gain access to all these wonderful people and places. Chris Crisman Photography returns one final time to San Antonio to finish. We’ll spend time with a national league mascot, capture some works of art, take in our own private rodeo, watch traditional jalisco dancers, re-visit the zoo, welcome a real fire blower to the studio, hang out with a bunch of peacocks, and photograph the 7’1″ legend “The Admiral” of the NBA David Robinson. It’s a relief to be finishing up, and now the real magic lay in the hands of our retoucher, Taisya.

Hormel REV – Neil DaCosta

I got a call from Neil DaCosta‘s rep out in Portland for a shoot back in Austin, MINNESOTA!! How clever of them. Home to Hormel Foods, Austin MN has a community of families that know, love, and are employed the brand. We partnered with the Austin High School where a small group of enthusiastic students had been working with Hormel to create a new kind of snack, high in protein and flavor, yet portable for on-the-go convenience. The product is now called REV Wraps and can be found in stores everywhere. The ad concepts came from BBDO Proximity agency in Minneapolis, and Neil‘s style was the perfect fit for the job. I extended my trip for a few days to help celebrate my father’s 60th birthday. What a trip!

Land O’Lakes TX – Jonathan Chapman

I was very excited that Jonathan Chapman Photography wanted to explore shooting for Land O’Lakes in Austin TX. After some brief pre-scouting, the deal was set! Austin looks fabulous in May while the northern states are still growing and greening up. Land O’Lakes had a need for a fresh and timeless look of major size murals within their headquarters main halls & lobby in Arden Hills MN. Perkins+Will of Chicago IL was leading the creative direction, with Gosia ZawiÅ›lak on site (she was absolutely delightful!). We had three major scenarios to capture in very different scenes in the city and rural areas. The model talent we cast did a great job, even the kids. We got an insiders view of JBG‘s beautiful organic farm, which now I see all over Austin in farmers markets and CSA deliveries. I love making those lasting connections. Land O’Lakes was very happy with the final imagery, and I like it too.

Costa del Mar Father’s Day – Jay B Sauceda

Well, not exactly “the beach”… Here’s a great shoot that I squeezed in between weeks of shooting in San Antonio. In fact, I cannot take full credit for this production, as Jay B Sauceda really took on a lot of responsibilities here. McGarrah Jessee needed photography done for a special Father’s Day ad selling amazing sunglasses by Costa del Mar suggesting the alternative to another necktie. We played with the set and added a little comedy to the flavor. I’m sure it was a big hit and hundreds of dads received sunglasses for Father’s Day.

Chris Crisman Unforgettable San Antonio Part2

Here comes round two of the ridiculously amazing San Antonio tourism campaign with Chris Crisman Photography! After a brief break, we are back in San Antonio for another week of amazing image captures. This time we’ll spend a little time in the studio, and then a string of wonderful locations: San Antonio zoo, Six Flags theme park, an old airfield with real working bi-plane, a nighttime rodeo bull, a triceratops skeleton, caves and caverns, rockstar Alejandro Escovedo, glorious works of art, a beautiful golf course, a gourmet restaurant, and an 1800’s cannon that really made a blast!!! By now we are really digging in to the San Antonio culture and getting close with a lot of the key people in charge of the city. I had a great time networking with all the owners and managers of these places, gaining permission to go behind the scenes and get a look at some of the places that tourists only wish they could go. In all, we saw another 50+ elements and photographed them all with perfect lighting as Chris Crisman always does. Now we take a break for a month while figuring out all the last components we need to make a really killer set of images to complete the campaign. Looking forward to it!

Here is the second of four ads we produced. Available in the December issue of Texas Monthly magazine, and online with interactive features at: http://unforgettablesa.com/!

Chris Crisman Unforgettable San Antonio Part1

To be honest, I don’t even know how to start this story, but here’s a go at it. This was absolutely the wildest ride I’ve had on ANY photo shoot. Early this year, in January, I started the estimating process with Chris Crisman Photography in Philadelphia to create 4 miraculously wonderful fantastic advertisements for the City of San Antonio’s Convention & Visitors Bureau. The concepts were being developed by the famous Rob Story of Proof Advertising here in Austin. The ads looked surreal and like nothing I’ve ever helped to create before. Chris Crisman was the perfect candidate for the project, and I would help him coordinate over 100 elements throughout the course of this six month project. The camera system we used would create files large enough for high-definition print as big as the side of a bus. One of the intentions was for these ads to be installed at the San Antonio Airport as giant murals, so we needed to be ready. By April 8th, we began our first round of captures. Just a few of the places and people we captured were: fields of bluebonnet flowers, the San Antonio convention center, Seaworld penguins and killer whales, parks & bicyclists, the Mercado square at sunrise, and of course the Texas countryside. We started with as many background plate elements as we could access, for layering more than 50 additional images per ad, on top of. Chris Crisman hired the most extremely talented post-production retoucher that blew the minds of everyone as it all came together. As of September 19th, the first ad in the series has gone live in Texas Monthly magazine and online with interactive features at: http://unforgettablesa.com/

Here is the first of four ads we produced. Absolutely breathtaking in oversized print.

Sierra Mist – Jay B Sauceda

I had the pleasure of working yet another job with Jay B Sauceda here in Austin. I’ve had the most repeat jobs with him since I’ve been in TX. This round we attack a fun/cute ad for Sierra Mist of Pepsico via the local agency LatinWorks. It was a dual language venture meant for the hispanic market but appealing to all, boasting about the REAL sugar featured in Sierra Mist Natural. I’ll admit, it’s good! We scouted a few parks, historic buildings, and urban areas to find the perfect place. We ended up on Auditorium Shores at Town Lake, and made the scene just beautiful. Our Stylist, Lauren Smith Ford found some wonderful dresses and busted her buns to find all the combinations of funky shoes we wanted. In the end, the ad looks like the concept, but WAY better. I love it. You can now see the ad on billboards and bus stops scattered across Los Angeles, Dallas, and Houston. Let me know if you spot one!

Humana Vitality Wellness – Tim Hale

It’s no secret, Austin TX is gorgeous in March and April. Tim Hale came in from southern California to get some Austin love. The scenery here gets green early, and looks geographically “neutral”, which a lot of clients enjoy. The shoot was targeting the Hispanic market for Humana Vitality, a wellness company that aims to help you stay motivated to be healthy and reach your fitness goals. Agency direction came from Marc Pepin at RAPP in New York, and our very own Rene Gardner at LatinWorks here in Austin. We scoured the city for really great faces, pretty locations, and turned out some fantastic images for two VERY full days.

Jonathan Chapman and company were then whisked away to Northern Iowa, the city of Lake Mills. This would be our third adventure with Hunt Adkins buy kamagra online ad agency for Mayo Clinic Health System.

Round 3 features a young lad names Kinser who had heart issues as a baby and is one heck of a little athlete and rambunctious kid. We got to meet his family and get into the most exciting of locations so far. Even got to try out some new equipment, underwater! Two new crew members also joined us for this day. Dicks Sporting Goods – Jay B Sauceda

This was an interesting collaboration between two photo crews for Dick’s Sporting Goods via Pentagram agency. Jay B Sauceda would handle the “beauty portraits” in studio, while Todd Langley had a completely separate producer+crew for location photos, running around downtown Austin. The concepts by Stu Taylor at Pentagram was to take real runners from around the country, with interesting stories, and photograph each of them looking victorious and sweaty (and sometimes dirty) just after their “race”. The photos were beautiful and gritty, appearing in the weekly ads and website. I hope this helped them sell a few more shoes!

Jay B shooting IT superstar, Manage Engine

Oh how a simple project can turn into a whirlwind of casting and execution! I produced this project for Jay B Sauceda for Manage Engine an IT management solution company through the ad agency Marketing Matters. The task was simple, just groups of business people on white background, BUT the budget called for non-professional models. I reached out to local talent agencies to see if we could wrangle any pros, but a larger response came from my beautiful CraigsList posting. The casting day was wild! We had folks driving from as far as Dallas, and some total no-shows. In the end we had a nice group of solid talent that pulled it off wonderfully. Jay B coached the lesser experienced and we get great images.

Lawn & Patio Art Buyer at Target

Here we go again! They wonderful folks at Target‘s inHouse agency asked me to come back this year to help make Lawn & Patio shoots a success. Tag-teamed with Tami Gephardt (formerly Tami Tonia or “TT”), we will conquer 9 photoshoots and nearly 400 shots, in Minneapolis and on the West Coast. I have a much deeper involvement this year than last and my experience has grown considerably since then. I’m ready!!

One photo from last year, but we’ve got something even better for THIS year…

Mayo clinic patient Peter with Jonathan

Jonathan and I are headed out to the land of cheese and beer, Wisconsin, for a second Mayo Clinic Health System story and portrait. We made the trip, had an excellent day of weather and got great outdoor shots as well as a interview about Peter’s fight with cancer. Quite the crowd joined us from Hunt Adkins and Mayo. Can’t wait for the next one!

Crew: Ashlee Ellert (hair/makeup/wardrobe stylist), Jeremy Wilker (second shooter, photo+motion asst), Patrick Schaefer (audio tech), John Fontana (digi tech)

Art Buying again, now for a LITTLE agency!

Not long ago, Sarah Hillstrom asked if I would be interested in an Art Buying contract position at Little & Company. I’ve worked with Little in the past as a Producer and waaay back when I was with John Reed Forsman. The project is for Target, a regular client of theirs, and who I am rather familiar with since doing art buying for Target’s inHouse agency last summer. This should be a serious hustle and some good fun!

A Mayo Clinic patient with Jonathan

Jonathan Chapman sealed the deal for a series of Television spots for the Mayo Clinic featuring personal stories of patients around the midwest near the Mayo Clinic Health System cities. I’m delighted to be helping with the production of this series of shoots. We will be traveling to several locations and meeting a lot of great people that have been helped by Mayo. The agency behind the design is Hunt Adkins, a clever Minneapolis based ad agency, who we are happy to partner with. On this shoot we got to visit the north end of Mankato speaking with Don Foster, a Cardiology patient after his heart attack. He and his wife were a pleasure to spend the day with, hearing their story.

Halloween Casting & Costumes with Kevin

I joined in the Halloween FUN with Kevin White at Orbit Studios for some late arriving costumes and a couple of reshoots. Kevin captured all the adult and kid’s costumes and I must say there were some REALLY cute kids. These are now in stores if you want a close encounter! The model talent were truly the stars, doing such a great job in front of the camera. Kevin evoked great expressions from all the ghouls, goblins, pumpkins and peapods. I helped with the casting+fitting for all the adults which was a blast, and then the execution of this half of costumes and accessories. I even got to see several friends who do modeling in Minneapolis. Great time at Orbit indeed!

Frontier Communications – Jonathan Chapman

Jonathan and I will be helping Frontier Communications create new images for their consumer line of products in direct mail pieces designed by the talented folks at Campbell Mithun ad agency. We had a really aggressive shoot schedule to get all the desired shots done. There were several scenes with a few pseudo families of model talents. We really had a great time and got so many wonderful shots.

Crew: Gina Hessburg (wardrobe & prop stylist), Ashlee Ellert (hair & makeup artist), Karl Herber (digi tech), Eric Schleicher (motion asst), Eric Eul (photo asst), Carolyn van der Vaart (production asst)

United Way – Jonathan Chapman

If you’re a fan of Cirque du Soleil, you’d love to see the youngsters at Circus Juventas performing, practicing, or just playing around! Jonathan and I put together a shoot with Campbell Mithun for the United Way non-profit, showing that we can do amazing things together. Over two days, we spent time on stills and then motion captures. Both versions will be displayed for their “Power of We” campaign. It was very exciting, involved some late nights, and more equipment than I’ve ever used on a shoot before. Everything went just delightfully and we got so many great photos and beautiful motion capture. The coaches from Circus Juventas were unbelievable.

I followed up the shoot by attending a live performance with my wife consisting of 24 acts buy 300+ talented kids. What an evening!! Not to be missed.

Spooky Target Casting at Orbit

It’s another one of those “tag team” jobs. For this week, Sarah Fisher at Orbit Studios was waist deep in the Target Halloween costume photography with Kevin White, and needed a double! I came in to help them cast for the adult costumes and transition the talent into the flowing shoot that Kevin and Sarah had running. Since Kevin was occupied, the photographer for this casting was Kelly Loverud, who I had met before but never worked with. He was very professional and got just what we needed from each of the talent coming in to show their stuff.

Unfortunately, I can’t share any photos of this shoot since the costumes are not in stores yet.

Crew was: Kelly Loverud (photographer), Liz Roemer (wardrobe stylist), Jenny Jenkins (stylist asst), Colin Kopp (photo asst), PeggySue Imihy (production asst)

Returned from our Thailand Honeymoon

TIME OUT for an unforgettable trip to the other side of the planet! We had considered Thailand among a few other destinations for our (belated) honeymoon after getting married last year. This was no lazy beach vacation, this was an adventure trip! We made a quick stop in Hong Kong, then entered Thailand in Bangkok. After 2 days of big-city-life, we were in need of different scenery and took an overnight train to Chiang Mai. This smaller bohemian city was much more the feeling that we loved. We saw temples, ate street food, squeezed our way through packed markets, fed & bathed elephants, took cooking classes, and received blind massages. THe final leg would take us to the islands of the southwest: Ko Phi Phi (where “The Beach” was filmed). These islands and beaches were the most beautiful that I’ve ever seen! Take a look at our photos…

Not just a band or a book: Genesis (10)

Jonathan tackled a project from the ad agency Very, inc whose owner, Sarah McNerney I knew from past projects. Shooting for Genesis10, we rented a really pretty office space recently left vacant by OLSON near the Lurcat restaurant. We hustled all over this large and complex space to capture some really impressive moments shared by some really great model talent!

Crew consisted of: Jennifer Dickey (wardrobe & prop stylist), Joy Phillips (hair & makeup artist), Karl Herber (digi tech), Heather Horton (stylist asst), Eric Schleicher (motion asst), Neil DeKrey (photo asst), Anne Healy (location scout)

Schwinn Bikes San Diego – Jonathan Chapman

It’s great to be back on the road with Jonathan Chapman, this time for an amazing shoot with Boom Island agency for Schwinn Bicycles! They needed new images for the packaging of all their bikes and accessories (coming to Target and Walmart stores near you!) and we added a motion component for their online site. After weeks of planning, we traveled to the beautiful streets and hills of southern California for nice weather in early February. We would be capturing both stills and motion for a whole week. Spending time in the hills, parks, and upscale neighborhoods of San Diego, I know why people love living here! My wife came to stay with me after the shoot for a long weekend, but that adventure is here: Matthew & Mikayla take San Diego.

Brace yourselves, I couldn’t get the “Behind the Scenes” gallery under 36 awesome images…

Jonathan Schwinn 1200px

Wonderful crew included: Alex Horner (DP), Natalie Dixon (local hair & makeup artist), John Fontana (digi tech), Eric Schleicher (motion asst), Tim Olsen (local photo asst), Christina Williams (local stylist asst), Rick Drake (local location scout)

William cannot get enough of the KIDS!

This short project for William Clark and Target was especially unique since I would be producing the front end and then handing everything over to the delightful J.J. Bitter, a fellow producer in Minneapolis. I would handle the creation and execution of a casting, and booking the crew and space for the shoot. JJ would book the talent chosen and run the shoot day. We saw another big crowd of super cute kids, well… ONE rambunctious one. It’s hard to imagine the art director struggle to choose the winners from all the great kids we cast. These photos were to be used for an upcoming weekly ad, April Week 1. Unfortunately I missed the final publication for a screen capture, but here’s a casting pic of one of the best little nuggets from the group!

Casting crew was: Elizabeth Wahl (wardrobe stylist), Brian Page (child wrangler), Heidi Prenevost (photo asst). The shoot day crew added these peeps: JJ Bitter (producer), Carol Stopera (hair & makeup artist), David Anderson (digi tech).

Capella University – Jonathan Chapman

It seem like schools, colleges, and universities are somehow ridiculously drawn to Jonathan, and I love it!!! We got to do some really nice photography for Capella University. It took a couple days flowing throughout Breck School with an amazing pack of kids, teens, and fake faculty to make some great captures. I will admit that it was a little creepy to have no kids in the whole school (due to winter break), but for our work it was perfect. The staff at Breck was very accommodating and we all took a shine to lead maintenance “Walter”.

We kept the crew pretty tight: Eric Schleicher (motion asst), Ashlee Ellert (hair/makeup/wardrobe stylist), John Fontana (digi tech), Neil DeKrey (photo asst), Anne Healy (location scout).

Edina Realty Billboards – Lee Stanford

The very next week, Lee Stanford had me on his team Producing for an Edina Realty project through FAME retail ad agency. We would be shooting for their online website and also for outdoor billboards to be posted around the twin cities! VERY exciting since I’ve never seen my projects on that scale. We paired one studio day with one location day. After a quick casting, we found some great talent that would carry the campaign to full potential. The sketches we’re silly and they talent delivered their all. Lee is so great at giving direction to talent and capturing their expressions! FAME & Edina Realty walked away very happy clients.

Our crew was: Ann Marshik (prop stylist), Cindy Warner (wardrobe stylist), Tia Cartwright (hair & makeup artist), Trev Fenner (digi tech), and Greg Schaal, Jared Cullison (photo asst), Barbara O’Brien (animal wrangler), and Anne Healy (location scout).

Here’s a few behind the scenes…

Target RED: a Pharmacist with Lee Stanford

After a few conversations, Lee Stanford found a job that fit my skills! I’m happy to be brought on board with a familiar ad agency, Little & Company but met a few new faces. This shoot was for Target‘s internal team member magazine called RED, and they needed a great portrait of a Pharmacist from Nebraska being featured in the following month’s issue. I saw a few of these magazines while I was Art Buying at Target last summer which was great for me to visualize placement. Talent was great, lighting was perfect. A regular walk in the park for mister Stanford!

Crew consisted of: Maureen Donahue (wardrobe stylist), Shanon Darsow (hair & makeup artist), Trev Fenner (digi tech), and Greg Schaal (photo asst).

International photography?

Jonathan asked me to help out with his recently booked gig with McDonalds. He had done a few shoots in the USA, but this project would take him Internationally to several countries! Destinations included Montreal Canada, Shanghai China, Sydney Australia, Melbourne Australia, all of which totaled 9 stops in airports. Yikes! I was in charge of setting up a LOT of the travel and accommodations, along with McDonald’s own agency. Special travel Visas were needed for a couple of the countries, which Travisa.com helped me with. I learned how to set up safe transit and smooth transitions between countries for the fellas and especially for their gear. The key to this was an equipment Carnet (a passport for your gear). This was much more work than I had expected, but was completely worth it for them. I was the “man on the ground” for their late night communicatoni requests from across the globe. “Find me an assistant in Melbourne”, “We need transportation in Shanghai”, whatever they needed, I provided. It was a great exercise, and I hope to be on the trip next time!

A Mexican Wedding… almost

This early November, I had a wonderful opportunity with my lovely wife to take in some fun in the sun! Our close friends (and my best lady in our own wedding) got married on a little island off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. We soaked up plenty of sun and got in some great snorkeling as well. The wedding was one of the most beautiful I’ve seen!

Target Kids at William Clark’s

Who could ask for anything more than a nice little crowd of super cute kids!?!? William Clark had me produce for his Target Weekly ad shoot. Starting with a casting where we saw SO many kids with their moms, dads, or grandparents looking for a part in our shoot day. Honestly, they were some of the most well behaved I’ve ever known. William keeps his calm and had a great time with all these youngsters. Of course he’s backed by an all star crew: Ave Green (child wrangler, laughter provoker), Elizabeth Wahl (wardrobe stylist), Andrea Holton (hair & makeup), Christopher Erickson (digi tech), Andrea Vingers (wardrobe asst), and Seth Iverson (photo asst).

Finally, MCTC Phase 3 with Jonathan

At last, Jonathan and I wrap up our motion + still shooting extravaganza for MCTC! This project has taken nearly a year to complete from concept to delivery. It’s a beautiful relief to see the finished products. This final leg of the project took us off campus to the MCTC affiliate’s Flying Cloud Airport and Hennepin Technical College for Air Traffic Control and Law Enforcement, respectively. We rounded it our by polishing up on a few more program areas on campus: Math, Theatre, Astronomy. This may have been the most fun of all three phases of shooting. Not only because of the content or locations, but the people that we were privileged to capture and interview. After it all, we wrapped up at the nearby AMAZING restaurant, Joe’s Garage.

Our crew consisted of Jesse Roesler of Bolster (DP), Eric Schleicher (AC), Ashlee Ellert (Hair/Makeup/Wardrobe), John Fontana (DigiTech), Patrick Schaefer (Audio Tech), Patrick Meehan (Photo+Video Assistant), and Chris Worlow (Photo+Video Assistant).

Done for now. Target Art Buyer.

This third week of September finishes out an eleven week project working as an Art Buyer downtown at Target‘s inHouse agency. It’s been a great run, but I’m also very glad to be release back to the wild! I’ve learned so much about the whole process before and after photography is even requested by the clients that I’ve been calling my coworkers. Maybe they’ll ask me to help out again next year!

Update: Here’s the final installation at my nearby Super Target.

Half Way to the End of Target and… My Birthday

I honestly didn’t know what to expect in taking on this project at Target’s inHouse agency. I’ve been pleasantly surprised and really amazed at all that happens here, before the requests are even given out to the photographers. I’ve been paired up with Natasha Nikolai in this Lawn & Patio extravaganza. Photographers include: Joel Larson, Chad Holder, Philip Harvey, Tom Connors, and Maki Strunc. I’ve been working the closest with Tom Connors, Maki, and the portions of Joel Larson’s work that includes talent models. I’m really learning a lot and gaining a huge amount of experience her in downtown. All of the ladies I and seated nearby are a constant fountain of hilarity and a great resource when I have any questions about the role of Art Buying. I absolutely love commuting on my Honda Metropolitan scooter.

I had my 32nd birthday on August 10th, yesterday, and it was positively wonderful. Getting closer to the end of this fabulous project.

Target Art Buyer for a Summer Job

I was approached by a few of the managers of the Target inHouse agency’s art buying department to help lead the 2012 Lawn & Patio project from withing Target as an Art Buyer. It’s a yearly adventure that takes place in MN backyards and parks from June-Sept by 5 local photographers. Traditionally, I would work closely with a photographer to make the shoot a success. Now I’ll be working more closely with the client side making sure THEIR needs are met. This interface would give me a lot of new experiences while tying into several past shoots where I have been the Producer for Lawn & Patio. My partner in crime: Natasha Nikolai, and I couldn’t ask for a better pairing! I’ll be working 80% in downtown at HQ, and 20% out on shoots as needed. Sounds exciting!

Checking into Austin TX

My lovely wife and I took a trip to check out Austin TX, after been recomended to it by several friends and relatives. Austin is a wonderful “sister” city to Minneapolis. Or maybe cousins. The city had a very comfortable feel, from the welcoming people, unbeatable food, and warm climate. I could see myself living here someday!

Making something out of nearly nothing

The Lot.
This project with Jonathan was pretty interesting. It was a personal project, and we all got to participate in unique ways. I brought several ideas, props, and a couple friends into the mix. The production was very flexible as the space was intended to be completely versatile and interesting with possible juxtapositioning of it’s contents. Take a look!

UCare Twin Cities – Jonathan Chapman

Here is the close of a three part campaign with Initio Advertising and Jonathan Chapman. We now bring it close to home into the Twin Cities, finding some iconic locations and spaces that are familiar to us city-folks. We bounced around the metro area to capture a few more seniors being amazing and impressive as they enjoy their healthcare under UCare, an independent nonprofit health plan providing health coverage and services to more than 250,000 members in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

The same awesome crew to finish the project: Ashlee Ellert (Hair/Makeup/Wardrobe), John Fontana (DigiTech), Eric Schleicher (Assistant)

UCare in SoMN with Jonathan

Initio Advertising hired Jonathan and I to complete a series of small town and city portraits across MN and a little into WI. For this leg of the project, we went south to Mankato, Faribault, Winona, La Crosse, and Eau Claire. What a loop! These folks were very enjoyable and Jonathan evoked some really wonderful emotions and expressions for capture. The final ads are really impressive.

Our slim road-crew was: Ashlee Ellert (Hair/Makeup/Wardrobe), John Fontana (DigiTech), Eric Schleicher (Assistant)

USA Hockey Kids with Jonathan

Jonathan and I had the opportunity to partner with Periscope Marketing for a great little project with USA Hockey, to help keep kids from getting hammered into the boards! This campaign was to challenge the rule change which allowed young kids to begin checking each other, which is just too early for some. The great concepts were flawlessly executed with plenty of fun and chills at the Buffalo Civic Center.

On the Periscope team was Carmen Roselles (Art Buyer) and a good ol’ friend from when I worked at Periscope, Patrick Weld (Art Director), as well as a few other essential party members from the agency. It couldn’t have gone smoother.

On our crew team was: Ashlee Ellert (Hair/Makeup/Wardrobe), John Fontana (DigiTech), Josh Grubbs (Photo Asst), Jeffrey Bryce Brodendecker (Photo Asst).

MCTC Phase 2 with Jonathan

Jonathan and I are back in action for two days at MCTC campus for some really exciting motion and still captures to help the redesign of their website. This time we got to see some more very interesting program areas: Child Development, Cinema, Sound Arts, Business, Nursing, Polysomnography. The students and faculty that we were able to interact with and photograph were really impressive. Each of them have their own story and they shared it all with us. Again, I cannot thank the Marketing Department’s own, Amy Danielson, for being such a necessary piece of this puzzle.

Our crew consisted of Jesse Roesler of Bolster (DP), Eric Schleicher (AC), Ashlee Ellert (Hair/Makeup/Wardrobe), John Fontana (DigiTech), Patrick Schaefer (Audio Tech), Patrick Meehan (Photo+Video Assistant), and Chris Worlow (Photo+Video Assistant).

Ron Crofoot shoots two more HD brands

Another wonderful shoot with Ron Crofoot. Collaboration between two product development teams and two amazing ad agencies: Twig Dzine and Wet Paint Communications. Revisiting two past locations that was so beautiful we couldn’t get enough of, we had to be careful not to duplicate photos of the past. With the talented digital retoucher, Mikey Newman, on our team we weren’t a bit worried about creating a fresh new look. The installations went very well and looked great in the three homes we featured. I met some great new faces and had the very best crew in town! The fabulous Kirki Schultz did all of our Prop & Set Styling, supported by Karla Triska and Sheila Quinn. Photo Assistants were Jared Cullison, Jason Wood, and Chuck Arnold. And you better believe that my favorite scout, Anne Healy, found these beautiful homes for us.

MCTC Phase 1 with Jonathan

Here begins my first experience executing motion and still photography in the same project. (at William Clark’s Scary Mommy shoot, I wasn’t responsible for the motion component). Jonathan Chapman has completely embraced the motion aspect of his Canon 5Dmk2 and 7D cameras and I’m learning a lot about the motion world. For MCTC college, we have begun a three part project to be shot over three semesters resulting in some great videos for their website redesign! Our first three days will be spent in their Welding, HVAC, Machine Tool, Painting, Photography, Graphic Design, Information Technology (IT), Apparel, Biotech, Chemistry, Culinary, Restaurant Management program areas of study. Both Jonathan and I are Alumni of MCTC so it was a familiar and nostalgic experience for both of us. The new science building was such a great advance for them and made a great scene for our captures. We were able to use several real students and faculty creating genuine interactions all over campus. Our crew consisted of Jesse Roesler of Bolster (AC), Eric Schleicher (AC), Ashlee Ellert (Hair/Makeup/Wardrobe), John Fontana (DigiTech), Patrick Schaefer (Audio Tech), Patrick Meehan (Photo+Video Assistant), and Chris Warlow (Photo+Video Assistant).

The scariest mommy William Clark has ever met

William Clark asked me to produce a fun local shoot for Target through the ad agency AKQA based in San Francisco. The fabulous team from AKQA was very professional and had great ideas and concepts for William to shoot. Our upcoming celebrity guest was the one and only Scary Mommy, Jill Smokler, who was an absolute delight to have. Jill was up for anything we asked her to do, no matter how silly or repetitive. This was my first professional project that entailed a mixture of both video and photography simultaneously. It’s quite amazing what can be done with the most recent models of DSLR cameras now. On crew we had Cindy Warner styling wardrobe and props, Andrea Holton of Moore Creative beautifully covering make up and hair, Ben John photo assisting, Jeremy Wilker as Digi Tech, Cathy Christensen taking care of alterations and tailoring, and local Patrick Schaefer on audio capture. And as usual, Orbit Studios knows how to treat a gang like us. I had a great time. Looking forward to working again with many of these talented folks!

Up to Ely with Jonathan Chapman

After MONTHS of planning, our first leg of shooting with Initio Advertising for a local health care company is completed! Believe me, this was a fantastic, yet bone chilling photo shoot. We made a giant loop throughout the northshore of Lake Superior and and surrounding areas and put over 650 miles on the road over two days and experienced temperatures down to -27º F. It had been a long time sine I’ve worked with Jonathan Chapman, and was very impressed when I had the opportunity to watch him in action. He’s such a talented shooter and makes the models (or real health care members in this case) feel comfortable and at ease to get great expressions and phenomenal shots.

We had a wonderful crew including Ashlee Ellert and Josh Grubbs. We have 2 more phases of this shoot and I anticipate only the best. Looking forward to the next project we share together!

Spinning with Little & Company

Had a great time today out in Delano with the wonderful folks from Pam Ratliff was delightful to work for and Jamie Parker art directed the live shoot. Mike Bigalke was our photographer and he did an exceptional job proving himself in an area that he may not have been so accustomed to. We had a lot of fun with 5 child talent and two of my favorite stylists. Janna Chin was on Wardrobe and Tia Cartwright was our lovely Make Up Artist. We all had a great time spinning their state-of-the-art merry go round.

NY in Earl’s Space

Jennifer Dickey hired me to help her bust out some incredible shot for an upcoming Target campaign. Photographer William Waldron came back to Minneapolis to make it happen. Earl Kendall provided the studio space for us to shoot in. Taking care of all the talent was Lori Evert & Cathy Christensen. Leading the project was Jen Hotovec of River Productions who executed everything I saw, flawlessly!

Babies really CAN Orbit

Holy cow, I just met over 300 babies! Sarah Fisher at Orbit Studios hired me to watch over the place while she was away. All the studios were filled with so much brightly colored non toxic plastic that custom shelving had to be built. There was so much talent under one roof! Just a few of the friendly familiar faces I had delight in seeing: Earl Kendall, Michael Haug, David Anger, Kirki Schultz, Heather Horton, Toby Rae, Angie Dinneen.

Cargill’s reduced sodium

Back with the photographer that helped give me so much experience over seven years. John Reed Forsman called and asked me to coordinate a nice job for Cargill Salt. Jill Kahn at Carmichael Lynch hired us to make a wonderful photo showing off salt, or the lack thereof. I’m sure you’ll see it soon. Our Art Director, Dale Austin, and Writer, Tim Bildsten, attended and were very pleased by the end of the day! Connie Singer took care of the wardrobe and Shannon Darsow made sure our model, Lalita Zapata looked beautiful for the camera. Assisting John were two of the best: Molly Meehan and Keith McKenna. Making sure all the digital images were organized in place and ready for the clients was digital tech Mark Gordon.

The ‘ettes continue with Ron

Begin Luminette. Round two with Ron Crofoot and another Hunter Douglas line of window treatments! I couldn’t be more excited to be booked on another job with Ron. Seriously, I’ve learned more about sheers, shades and blinds than I ever thought I would. Duane Lage was again first at hand throughout the shoot, supported by Jared Cullison and Keith McKenna. This time it was great to have Janna Chin as our Prop and Wardrobe Stylist who did an excellent job bringing beautiful props to make every home look just the way we wanted it to. Supporting Janna was the lovely Meg McGreevy who I found to be a speedy girl that always got what we needed. Art Direction came from the brilliant folks at Cactus in Denver lead by Jorge Lamora. All the delightful bunch from Hunter Douglas again treated us so very well. Their products are so stunning and Ron was again assigned to make them look even better, which he of course did and made seem effortless.

Crofoot and my first ‘ette

Ron Crofoot hired me after I contacted him when Duane Lage suggested we meet. This was my first experience with Ron and it was absolutely fantastic! Working with Ron pushed me to to new levels in many ways. I really do have a lot of experience and this job for Hunter Douglas employed all of my skills. The team came together seamlessly with Ron at the helm and Duane at his side. Our lovely Prop Stylist, Nina Sheffy, came in from New York and did a wonderful job. We spend two weeks shooting under the Art Direction of the talented Brandt Wilkins at Wet Paint Communications of Denver. Production crew included Jason Wood, Jared Cullison, Rob Walstead and Trev Fenner. Each of them very hard workers and helped make some excellent photographs. The locations were were able to shoot in were beautiful and perfect for the product. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Ron and his team. He is so appreciative of the talented people that surround him and completely modest about his own great work. It couldn’t be too soon to work together again. End Silhouette.

Man-Wear

Once again, another credit goes to the talented talented Jennifer Dickey who dropped my name when Jim Henderson needed a Digital Tech right away. I had the day open and I’m certainly capable of the job, so I took it. Little did I know what it would lead to. Jennifer styled the clothing for Scott Barber with Steve Collins producing it. Duane Lage was Jim’s Assistant Photographer and helped guide the technical aspects of this shoot. I was happy to be an important part of a very fast paced shoot. Jason Wood and Keith McKenna were the diligent photo assistants and Tony Vu helped Jennifer. Tia Cartwright was on set making sure the men’s faces looked just right with great hair as well. It was a great day and I left with a few new great connections!
